Barbara Schlichtman Esq.
Barbara Schlichtman is an attorney with the Maine Center for Elder Law, LLC, in Kennebunk, Maine. Her focus is helping clients with long-term health care planning, estate planning and special needs planning. She works with special needs trusts, a tool to protect government benefits; probate matters; estate administration; and estate recovery.
A large part of her law practice includes helping families navigate how to pay for long-term care and finding the best place to provide care for their loved one. She is prepared to help clients whether they are ready to engage in pre-planning work or to work with a crisis situation. In her special needs planning work, she strives to ensure that every step has been taken to care for your loved one. She develops collaborative, working relationships with her clients, as well as their financial advisors or other pertinent professionals. Her work also includes Medicare Set Aside trusts in the case of personal injury awards.
Barbara is a member of the Elder Law Section of the Maine State Bar Association, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and ElderCounsel, LLC, a national organization of attorneys specializing on elder law issues. She is licensed to practice law in Missouri and Alabama as well as Maine. She limits her practice to Maine. In her career leading up to a full-time law practice, she worked as a journalist for the daily newspaper in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, covering courts, crimes and many other stories arising between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. She also worked at CNN.com as the first legal news editor for the website.
Barbara has also held university appointments teaching journalism, communications law and conflict resolution. She earned her Bachelors of Journalism degree (1989) and J.D. (1992) from the University of Missouri.
