CMS Names Thousands of Nursing Homes With High Bedsore, Restraint Rates
- February 9th, 2008
For the first time ever, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has publicly released the names of thousands of nursing homes across the country that don't meet federal standards in rates of using patient restraints or preventing bedsores.
Although CMS officials said that the 4,037 nursing homes on the list are "not the worst nursing homes in the country," it says the facilities will be targeted for oversight over the next three years by the private Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs) that it hires to improve care at nursing homes and other facilities. CMS, which released the names as part of its Ninth Statement of Work for the QIOs, will link the work completed by QIOs to measurable outcomes during the length of the next three-year contract, which begins in August.
