Your Active Support is Vital to Pass Nursing Home Legislation!
Congress is considering the most important nursing home legislation in 20 years. Two of Congress's leading supporters of nursing home reform, Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, Ranking Republican on the Finance Committee, and Senator Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, Chairman of the Special Committee on Aging, have introduced S. 2641, The Nursing Home Transparency and Improvement Act.
The National Citizen's Coalition for Nursing Home Reform (NCCNHR) has worked with congressional staff to develop this important legislation, which would increase transparency of nursing home ownership, operations, staffing, and expenditures; improve the consumer complaint process; increase civil monetary penalties; and expand public information about nursing home quality, including penalties and staffing levels.

Kara Swanson -- Brain Injury Survivor and Author -- Will "Carry the Fork"
Kara Swanson, a brain injury survivor, lecturer, and author of the book, I'll Carry the Fork ! - Recovering a Life After Brain Injury, gave an astoundingly truthful, triumphant and inspiring presentation last week at the Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts (BIA-MA) 2008 Annual Conference held on March 27th in Marlborough. Kara warmly shared some of her own experiences of her injury and subsequent challenges of her recovery, using laughter, personal tales and some tears. She related instances of her trials in caring for her parents after their multiple strokes and a tale of her brothers who (to this day) do not know that she accidentally substituted dog food for gravy when she prepared her first family meal after her brain injury.
Kara read a good part of her speech and explained that her reason for doing so was her loss of short-term memory. She warmly, wittingly and truthfully shared her experiences, successfully relating to many survivors and professionals in the room, as she shared a glimpse into the life of a person who has been changed by a head injury.
