For Jeffrey Hammond, the practice of Elder Law is personal. Jeff’s many years of experience in law and in business did not prepare him for the crisis he faced in 2005 and 2006 when his father suffered a stroke and both of his parents suffered from dementia and other medical problems. At that time, Jeff began an important but painful journey navigating the options and opportunities concerning treatment, care and legal matters.
Experience with His Family
“Not only did I watch the suffering and difficulties experienced by my aging parents,” said Jeff, “but I also learned first-hand about the tremendous burdens placed on those who must deal with problems and make decisions when a family is in crisis. Living through this difficult and painful time, I realized that I could help others by focusing on the needs of the elderly and disabled.”
Jeff graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in civil engineering. He received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore. He is licensed to practice law in Maryland and in Washington, DC.
Jeff assists his clients in the areas of long-term care planning, Medicaid asset preservation, estate planning, guardianship, trusts and estate administration. He helps clients and their families determine eligibility for benefits to which they are entitled. At the same time, he works with them to implement sound strategies to preserve client assets and resources. Jeff works to protect the quality of life, financial security and independence of individuals and families. He believes in compassionate advocacy for the aging, the disabled and their families.
“I know that many of the decisions associated with long-term care and other types of planning are complex and difficult. Yet if these decisions are not made the result may be that important and very personal choices are made by someone else, possibly by someone who is not a family member. We work with our clients to create safeguards so that important decisions are made in accordance with their wishes.”
Hammond and Associates, LLC is an Elder Law firm focused on client needs in the area of Elder Law including Estate Planning and Estate Administration.
Long Term Care Planning is an important area in which we work. The cost of long term care is high. Depending upon the particular circumstances it may be appropriate to apply for Medicaid Long Term Care Benefits. Many people are surprised to learn that Medicaid has specific provisions that can allow for asset preservation. We work with our clients to do essential Long Term Care Planning and to help them navigate what can be a complex application process.
We work in the area of Estate Planning for all clients from single individuals just beginning careers, to young couples, to all families with minor children, adult children or no children, to older adults who are well aware of their changing needs as they age.
In doing Estate Planning we explore with our clients the variety of legal options available. It is common to talk about a Last Will and Testament, a durable financial Power of Attorney and a Medical Advance Directive. In addition to these, other Estate Planning approaches may be appropriate such as different types of trusts including Special Needs Trusts.
We also work in the area of Estate Administration (sometimes called Probate). If a family member or other individual has been named as Personal Representative, we can work with that person to see that the various matters of Estate Administration are accomplished.
