Elderly residents are placed in nursing homes based on their Social Security and retirement incomes. An elderly person who has to pay for rent, groceries, utilities and home care cannot live on the minuscule amount from Social Security. It certainly won't pay for expensive retirement homes. She owes quite a bit to the private nursing home, Medicare only paid for 90 days and she was there almost 6 months. She could not pay them very much during her stay because her SS check was used to pay down some of her many medical bills and rent, although they did get a little of it. How will this private nursing home get paid once her Medicaid application is approved and she is in the county home with no control over her monthly checks? How will her leftover bills be paid? She has no private assets, just a small subsidized rental apartment and was dirt-poor, lived on her social security check and whatever we could do to help her out. She owes thousands in bills (esp. the nursing home) and it is too much for us to take on.

Thanks for any help.
