My mother has lived with me, my husband, and my 2 granddaughters since October 2002. She has her own room, den and bathroom. In 2006 my mother wrote out a $12000 check to me (for 2003 & 2004 room/board/meals/food/laundry) and a $12000 check to my husband (for 2005 & 2006). She also gave her 2 (minors) great grandaughters ($10,000 & $8,000 respectively for private school tuition for helping her with errands/personal care when they came home from school). In 2007 she wanted a more handicap accessible bathroom (lower and wider bathtub; higher vanity sink and toilet; and other handicap features which totaled - $17,000). My husband and I secured the contractor etc. and paid the bills for which my mother reimbursed us.

My mother had complications from leg surgery and from severe spinal degeneration in May 2008 and is subsequently in long term nursing home care. She has been direct pay since August. I take care of all her financial, personal care, laundry, etc. and visit daily. It is anticipated that she has enough funds for an additional 5-6 months before applying for Medicaid.

Should I provide detailed comments on the Medicaid application in reference to the room/board, etc. monies that were paid? I will be seeking advice from an Elder Care Attorney next month. What additional documentation will I need? Please advise. Thank you.

Mary,

Yes, when you apply for Medicaid for your mother, you must tell them everything.  That said, work closely with your Rhode Island elder law attorney (go to www.elderlawanswers.com to find one) who will help you present everything in the best light possible.  It's not too early to set up your first meeting with the attorney.

Good luck.

Yes, I have started writing comments and explanations for the several checks written. I also have copied all the supporting documentation to attach to the application. Thank you for your response and information.
